Thought for the Week - w/b 19 January 2022

Jesus is the light of the world…….

Have you ever been scared of the dark before?  When I was a child and I confess into my teens I couldn’t sleep unless the light was on in the hallway.  My bedroom door had a window above it so it gave me reassurance and comfort to know the light was on and I was safe.

I don’t think we need to be a child to hold this fear of the dark, a fear that transcends from not seeing clearly, our minds becoming overactive and thinking the worst – what is lurking around the corner?  What is out there that can harm me?

But we don’t need to be afraid.  And the light can be shining all the time for us if we want it to.  Just as we lit the fifth candle of our advent wreath on Christmas Day reminding us of Jesus bringing purity and light to the world, this light doesn’t need to be a momentary flicker within our own lives.  Difficult situations may not necessarily be halted for us, and God may not lift us out of our difficult situations, but instead God Himself can come into the situation and be the constant light in our darkness.

In the bible, John chapter 8 verse 12, Jesus says:

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

The great thing about this is we can share this light with others.  With Jesus in our lives, we can shine the good news, truth and love of Jesus to those around us.  We can provide the illumination that can make people feel safe.  We can draw people out of the darkness towards the light.

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16

Do not be afraid of the dark anymore.  That window of light can be revealed for us all, we just have to allow it to shine.

Thank you Jesus, for the light you illuminate that draws away our fears.

Let us be reminded of the good news you brought to the world & let us follow you in truth & word and let us shine this light for others.

Amen.
