Thought for the Day - September 8th

Thought for the Day - 8th September 2020

The Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

“My Soul doth Magnify the Lord, and my Spirit hath rejoiced in God, my Saviour.”

Today, 8th September, is celebrated as the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary chosen by God to be the Mother of Jesus.

Mary must have experienced so many emotions and painful experiences as a Mother, but always showed reverence and obedience to God.

“Let it be to me according to Your word.”

Firstly, there could have been the shame of being an unmarried mother, until Joseph, also obeyed God’s messenger. He married Mary and adopted Jesus as his first born.

Mary experienced the anxiety of thinking she had lost Jesus when He stayed behind in the Temple---many of us know that feeling of thinking we have lost a child!

There were occasions when Jesus rebuked Mary for her motherly concern, or when she was seemingly too ambitious for Him. She will no doubt have felt loneliness when He moved away to start His earthly Ministry.

Probably the worst pain of all for any Mother to experience, was to see her Son dying an agonising death on the Cross.

“Strengthen us to walk with Mary the joyful path of obedience and so bring forth the fruits of holiness.    (Collect.)
