Festival of the Venerable Bede.

We all know the phrase, “the Venerable Bede,” but I wonder how much we really know about him. He was born in Northumbria circa 670ad and when he was seven, his parents gave him to the Monastery of St Peter and St Paul at Warmouth. He then moved to Jarrow where he lived for the rest of his life. He died there in 735 ad.

He was a great scholar, teacher and is still one of the most important sources for Anglo Saxon History. “Your servant Bede served you with singleness of heart and loved you above all things.”

How wonderful to still be considered a supreme authority and teacher after so many centuries. Few of us will aspire to that. Maybe one or two will be grateful for our teaching, our professionalism or especially our kindness.

Everybody can be great, because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You don’t have to know Einstein’s theory of Relativity to serve----you only need a heart full of grace. A heart generated by love.

A favourite prayer of mine:  

Teach us good Lord, to serve Thee as Thou deservest,
To give and not to count the cost; to fight and not to heed the wounds;
To toil and not to seek for rest; to labour and not to ask for any reward,
Save that of knowing we do thy will. Amen.
